Bumps, Whistles, & Gurgles: A Homeowner’s Guide to Plumbing Sounds

North East Air Conditioning, Heating & Plumbing knows there are many unsettling plumbing sounds that leave homeowners scratching their heads. Today, we break down what those strange bumps, whistles, and gurgles mean and when they might indicate the need for professional attention.

Unnerving, But Usually Harmless Plumbing Noises

Occasional Creaking or Popping Sounds in Walls

Occasionally, you may notice quiet creaking or popping sounds from your plumbing, especially after running hot water. This happens because pipes expand and contract as they heat up and cool, sometimes rubbing against brackets, supports, or the wall framing. This is normal and usually not a cause for concern.

Soft Gurgling When Drains Empty

It’s not unusual to hear a soft gurgle as water drains. As water flows down the pipes, it displaces the air inside. That moving air can create a brief bubbling or gurgling sound as it escapes or travels through the plumbing. You’ll notice it most when drains are clear and water flows freely.

If gurgling increases in volume and drainage slows, it could be an early sign of a partial clog or trapped air in the lines.

If your HVAC condensate line is tied into a bathroom sink, which is more common in older homes, you may also hear gurgling even when the sink is not in use. This can be normal but is more often a problematic sign, so it’s best to call a technician. In that case, it doesn’t hurt to have the system checked.

Troubling Plumbing Sounds to Look Out For

Banging or Clanging: The “Water Hammer”

That sudden, loud bang or clunk when you turn off a faucet or appliance is called a water hammer. It happens when flowing water suddenly stops, creating a pressure surge that makes pipes rattle against walls or each other. The most common cause for water hammer is a failing pressure reducing valve (PRV), which is a relatively inexpensive repair and should be addressed as soon as possible. Additionally, excessive water pressure, loose pipes, and quick-closing valves on appliances like washing machines or dishwashers are common triggers.

Water hammers won’t just go away on their own. Over time, the banging could loosen pipe joints and connections or cause long-term damage to your plumbing. And while tightening your pipes and adding insulation can help reduce potential damage, it’s better to address what’s causing the water hammer. An experienced plumber can fix the problem by installing a water hammer arrestor (a modern device designed to absorb the shock) or replacing the faulty PRV.

Rattling Behind Walls

A rattling or vibrating sound behind walls or under floors can occur when water moves through pipes if they’re loose or not securely attached. While usually not an emergency, excessive friction and repeated movement can damage the pipes or joints over time. A plumber can secure them with pipe straps or guides to prevent further issues. If the rattling happens often or grows louder, schedule a service call before larger repairs are necessary.

High-Pitched Whistling

A high-pitched whining or whistling sound when water is running may indicate your plumbing needs attention. This noise can come from a worn washer or valve in a faucet or toilet. It can also be due to mineral deposits, often caused by San Antonio’s hard water, that narrow the opening in a pipe. If ignored, these components can fail, causing leaks, water waste, and costly damage.

Hissing or Trickling When Water Is Off

A hissing or soft trickle when no water is running can indicate a hidden leak in your plumbing. These leaks often occur behind walls or under floors, where they are difficult to detect. Even a small leak can lead to mold growth and damage if left unaddressed. If you notice these sounds, have a plumber inspect your system promptly to prevent further issues.
