What Is a PRV and Does Your Home Need One?

When it comes to plumbing, you may assume that the higher your water pressure is, the better. But a powerful flow isn’t always safe for your plumbing system. That’s where a pressure-reducing valve (PRV) comes in. This small but mighty device plays a big role in keeping your plumbing system up to code.

What is a PRV?

A pressure-reducing valve is a bell-shaped plumbing device installed on your home’s main water line, usually just after the water meter. Its job is simple: to reduce the incoming water pressure from the city supply, which can be much higher or unsteady, to a level that’s safer, more consistent and manageable for your home.

Why Would You Need a PRV?

State plumbing codes generally require a PRV if your home’s water pressure is above 80 PSI (pounds per square inch). Most PRVs are set to cap water pressure to 75 PSI, which is strong enough for daily use without putting too much strain on your system.

If you ever pull a permit for work involving your water line, like replacing a water heater, repairing a yard leak, or installing a water softener, you’ll probably be required to install a PRV to pass inspection. Many plumbing companies are even reluctant to warranty work done in homes with really high water pressure unless a PRV is installed.

Even if you haven’t experienced a plumbing issue yet, most municipalities strongly encourage PRV installation. This helps maintain even pressure throughout the city’s water grid.

What a PRV Doesn’t Do

There are a couple common misconceptions about pressure-reducing valves, especially when it comes to leaks. A PRV does not:

  • Prevent water leaks entirely. High water pressure can make existing leaks worse, but a PRV won’t stop a leak from happening in the first place.
  • Eliminate the need for repairs. It may help extend the life of your plumbing system, but it’s not a fix-all.

“But I Don’t Like the Lower Pressure…”

Many homeowners are disappointed when they first notice the reduced pressure after a PRV is installed. Though it might not feel quite as powerful in the shower or when filling a sink, a slightly lower pressure can help you stay compliant and benefit your community.
